What is Hijama (cupping)?

What is Hijama?

Hijama is a clinical, therapeutic and sometimes spiritual practice involving the use of hollow, rounded utensils called “cups”, small surgical blades and a hand-held piece of equipment known as a “pump”. These are used to draw cellular waste from the body, stretch out muscles, relieve pressure in the blood vessels and stimulate the immune system.

How is it performed?

To achieve this desired result, a practitioner of Hijama places the cups on certain points of the body, depending on the treatment, and uses the pump to pull up the skin of those places. After a short while, approximately 4 – 5 minutes, the skin is released and the cups are removed so that the practitioner can use a blade to make shallow, small “scratches” in the skin beneath the cup before replacing it. The cups are usually left for roughly 10 minutes or until the patient stops bleeding from the scratches. The practitioner would normally round off the treatment by removing the withdrawn blood and toxins, disposing of the cups and sterilising the area with an anti-septic spray and olive oil.

And that’s all there is to it! A simple, sterile and safe way to optimise the health of our patients.

How does it help?

During a Hijama treatment, 4 bodily mechanisms are usually activated to enable cleansing and healing. These are:

Mechanism 1 – Venting physical pressure

(creating gaps within tissue cells so that pain receptors get a chance to rest)

For conditions such as:

  • Swelling caused by an allergic reaction
  • Water or fluid retention from heart or kidney failure

Mechanism 2 – Removing chemical stimulus

(gets rid of the immune response ‘remains’ in tissue which causes false pain signals)

For conditions such as:

  • Removing after effects of chemotherapy in former cancer patient
  • For trauma sites where foreign bodies have been present, such as penetration by sharp objects
  • Bits of bone left over from fractures or breaks

Mechanism 3 – Releasing pain reducing agents

(sending chemicals to affected area as part of immune response to dampen stress)

For conditions such as:

  • De-stressing those who are easily stressed
  • Relaxing damaged or sprained muscles
  • Menstrual cramps

Mechanism 4 – Restoring normal tissue function

(re-activating cells in tissues and unclogging the lymphatic drainage system)

For conditions such as:

  • Inflammation from arthritis
  • Rebuilding brittle bones from osteoporosis
  • Damage caused by acne or abscesses on and underneath skin
